Turkish Rotarians Visit a great success

Between 11th October and 14th October 2012, Drogheda Rotary Club hosted a group of 17 Turkish Rotarians & their partners. The Turks were from the Sisli Club in Istanbul.

The seeds of this historic visit started with a local artist Sean O’Dwyer been invited to Istanbul two years ago. His famous painting depicting the tale of the Turkish ship visiting Drogheda in 1847 during the worse year of the Irish Famine, played a significant part in this contempary development of this Turkish Drogheda connection.

Local Rotarians, Tom Eustace & Donagh O’Brien chaperoned them for their entire visit. The visitors were thrilled with many of the local attractions including Millmount, Highlanes Gallery, Oldbridge House, Bru na Boinne plus the civic reception in the Thostal.

Visits to local hostelries included, the Salt House, Scholars Town House & the Gala Dinner hosted by Drogheda Rotary Club on the Saturday night in the d Hotel.

Drogheda Rotary Club wish to thank the d Hotel for looking after our visitors, plus the excellent local musicians & dancers that were lined up for them along the way. These included, Miriam McCarthy’s Irish Dancers, Aideen Morrissey & Kevin Brannigan and in particular Sean Corcoran and his group of young musicians.

Drogheda Rotary also wish to thank the support of Drogheda Chamber of Commerce President, Padraig Kierans and the much valued input of local historian Brendan Matthews.

A big thank you also to Sisli Rotarian, Hulusi Gencay who helped organise the trip from the Istanbul side. Huluse was a pleasure to deal with.
