Meals on Wheels 40th Anniversary Celebrations

Through the work of Ger DeLoughry and his committee preparations are underway to organise an event on Friday 26th November 2010 to celebrate 40 years of the Drogheda Rotary Club Meals on Wheels service

The following is a brief history

In March 1970, under the leadership of Rotary Club President Willie Berney  and the President of the Inner Wheel Club,  his wife Violet (both deceased), the two clubs decided to start a Meals on Wheels project for the town of Drogheda.

A fund raising  committee was set up to raise money to cover the expense of buying equipment and financing  the cost of the meals. Recipients were referred to the service by the Community Health Nurses.

By October the scheme was in operation providing 20 meals every Wednesday.  They  were very fortunate to have been given the use of the kitchen in the Parochial Centre in Peter Street.  In March 1971 the scheme was extended to 2 days a week and the number of recipients increased to 30.  The estimated cost per week then was £6.  Drogheda Rotary  now serve approximately 50 meals, 3 days a week.  The North Eastern Health Board now contribute towards the cost of the meals and the balance is covered by fund raising projects run by the Rotary Club.

The meals were originally cooked by members of the Inner Wheel Club, but this has been extended to include approximately 70 volunteers. There are 12 teams involved on a monthly rotation.  The Rotarians and friends provide the delivery service on a similar basis.

In 2000 the Parochial Centre sold the premises so the search for a new kitchen facility commenced.  The Vincent de Paul committee heard of this and offered the use of their kitchen in Trinity Street. The new location was ideal in that the access was better and cooking facilities were upgraded to institutional catering standards. The Rotary Club is indebted to the Committee of St Vincent de Paul for their support.

Over the years the Meals on Wheels Directors have included Willy Berney, John Matthews, Coleman Carroll and currently Ger DeLoughry. The Ladies cooking teams have been coordinated over the years by Violet Berney, members of the Inner Wheel Club and current current coordinator is Adri Berney.
